That may be fine if you were in sales or product development and made a great many contacts while on your last job. Of course if you were researching back in the lab or designing the latest product or crunching numbers, chances are good your network is pretty small. You’re left to contact the photocopier repairperson, the husbands or children of you mother’s bridge club, the father’s of your son’s little league teammates, or maybe your golf buddies. And who doesn’t love letting everyone know that after years with your company, giving your best, you just got downsized, right-sized, restructured, bought, merged, laid off or any one of a dozen other terms that euphemistically mean axed from your job?

Or perhaps you’re still working on the dead-end job. Don’t procrastinate. If you are not being appreciated for your contributions, being given appropriate advancements in position and compensation, the situation is unlikely to change on its own. Yes, you can find a million excuses for staying, not the least of which is an uncertain job market in what is perhaps a shrinking industry, but to wait for something to happen to improve you current circumstances is risky and before you realize it your prime career development years will have passed you by.

VANGUARD NEXUS FIRST CONTACT SERVICES ARE

For the person who realizes that the commonly used method of sending out hundreds of resumes and then hoping to get a call is a totally ineffective job search method, but up until now the only one available.

For the person who is currently employed who would like to move forward on his career track but doesn't have the time during the work day to make "networking" calls and might jeopardize his current position by making such calls.

For the job seeker who simply can't make cold calls or who is not comfortable promoting or "selling himself".

For the person, employed or unemployed, who realizes that he is best promoted by a 3rd party professional with over 20 years of experience in "selling people".

For the person who wants to recruit or "headhunt" his next employer

THE VANGUARD NEXUS PROCESS

· 1. We will prepare your resume so it acts as a true selling tool. This means a flawlessly written two-page resume in a feature/benefits format... because anyone who has ever sold any product (and in this case the product is you) knows that features alone do not sell, but the benefits from those features must be clearly stated.

(Resume writing is a separate function and not included in any package pricing. Please read further explanation on our fee page.)

· 2. We will assist you in generating a targeted list of qualified companies within your industry and personal parameters who can appreciated your credentials and experience along with the name and phone number of the actual decision maker or hiring authority within your division. Heads of or HR or personnel do not count as contact names and will not be considered hiring managers.

· 3. We will prepare the perfect, concise, 60- second sales presentation and then make the confidential introductory and inquiry calls to the hiring authorities, making them aware of your talents, your interest in their organization and your ability to contribute to their company’s goals.

· 4. We will strive to stimulate enough interest in your credentials in each call for that hiring manager to personally request your resume. For those hiring authorities who do request a resume we will write a cover letter that resells you and reinforces the original cold call.

· 5. We will follow-up the resume with a re-sale phone call and attempt to set up a telephone meet and chat interview between you and the hiring authority.

At this point Vanguard Nexus will have no further personal dealings with the interested company but will concentrate their efforts on you.

· 6. We will prepare you for a successful telephone meet and greet interview, assisting you with researching the company and the hiring authority to find information which can be used toward conducting an impressive and stimulating conversation aimed towards getting the invitation for a face to face meeting. You will be coached on identifying the hiring authority’s needs and quickly converting your skills and past experience into meeting those needs. Preparation is key to success as this will be your first personal contact and first impressions are critical. We will de-brief you after the interview so that together we can glean all pertinent information whether or not you achieved the appointment for the personal interview.

· 7. We will prepare you for a successful personal interview with the prospective company and all that entails from the way you present yourself to how you conduct the direction of the interview itself.

8. We will debrief you after the interview to ascertain all salient points discussed and prepare for you a re-sell follow up letter stressing your strong points and minimizing any perceived short falls, accentuating your interest in the company and the position, moving you towards the request for a second and final interview.

You will take over each negotiation from this point on using what you have learned throughout your work with Vanguard Nexus to close the hiring company and get the job offer.

WHAT VANGUARD NEXUS IS NOT

We do not do extensive and expensive career testing, evaluation, guidance or defining of career paths.

We do not work with new graduates or people aspiring to total career change, only experienced professionals
seeking to advanced in their field and industry.

We will not knowingly make false claims on behalf of our clients, or present them in any misleading way to potential employers as to work or academic credentials.

We will not pressure you to take any offer, do salary negotiations, "close" or do any negotiations with the potential employer beyond the scope of the introductory process as described.

We will not make empty claims or promises... we do not have some special access to high-paying jobs or - knowledge of job markets no one else has or access to a some special set of headhunters. Please believe us... firms who make such claims are scam artists and not to be believed. READ THIS SCAM ALERT

We do not guarantee higher paying jobs, more prestigious jobs or a job at all, only a proven method of job search through third party promotion.

R. If you decide to use our services you will in essence be hiring your own "headhunter" who will be taking you through 3/4 of the headhunting sales process for a fraction of the price the corporate client would pay for either the recruiting or outplacement services you will be receiving.

As is the case with career consulting, outplacement, or for that matter, legal, medical or any other "services" rendered, we offer no guarantees at any point during the process. Ours fees are for services and are not contingent on your receiving or accepting an actual job offer.

THE VANGUARD NEXUS RESUME - $200

Afer reviewing tens of thousands of resumes submitted over the years to our placement specialists, Vanguard Nexus has compiled the best components of the best written resumes into the most effective selling tool possible. The result is a flawlessly written two-page resume in a feature/benefits format. In our experience a resume composed of features only or past work history with job descriptions simply will not get a second look. Since selling you is our goal we do insist that you be presented using what is known to be the most successful presentation format.

The Vanguard Nexus Resume preparation is a separate service from all other parts of our placement program. In some cases this type of resume production can require several interviews for many people find it difficult to quantify their past work experiences in terms of its contribution to their employer. If you already have a resume in this format, can tweak the one you have to meet our specifications or can prepare one yourself following the exact instructions we have provided, then we are as pleased as you.

If you have a "professionally written" resume that you paid a fortune for that is not in a feature/benefit (also known as and action/result) format or one written in an annoying one page calling card layout, then we are truly sorry that your money was, in our opinion, ill-spent for either is virtually useless as selling tools and will not meet with the image of you we are trying to portray to prospective employers.

_________________________________

INITIAL CONSULTATION CALL - FREE

If you are reading this by special invitation your resume has been reviewed and you fit within the parameters of the candidates we are best qualified to assist. To those of you who have been pre-selected we urge you to call, reserve time and services and we can get started immediately.

To all others, we welcome you and hope we can be of assistance to you in your search for greater job opportunities. At this time Vanguard Nexus will only be working with experienced middle management professionals. We will not be working with individuals at the "board hire" level or new college graduates at the entry level. We are generalist and have experience working in multiple disciplines in both the service and manufacturing sectors. We place from the central to the eastern time zones only.

To all considering our services, we encourage you to get your reservations in quickly for we will only be able to accommodate a limited number of individuals during any time block. We are confident that the aspiring professional will understand the potential of this new service in increasing their career possibilities and will certainly appreciate our introductory prices.

PREPARATION OF THE TARGETED CALL LIST - $200

We will ASSIST you in generating a targeted list of qualified companies within your industry. taking into account your own personal parameters such as size of company, geographic location, corporate culture, etc. You will be expected to help us with names of companies within your industry that are direct competitors or for which you have realistic expectations of utilizing your skill set. Together we need to exhaust all avenues of search to obtain the name and phone number of the actual decision maker or hiring authority within your division. Heads of HR or personnel or corporate recruiter do not count as contact names and will not be considered hiring managers.

The call list will be a constant work in progress as additions must be made with every company that falls off it for whatever reason. There should be no less than 20 pre-qualified companies with its researched hiring authority on the list at any given time.

THE PRESENTATION AND THE COLD CALLS - $250

The presentation call is what sets Vanguard Nexus apart from any career counselors or outplacement programs. What is true of "networking" as a means of getting that new and better position, and the reason it is impressed and imposed upon every job searcher is that it is the most, and often only successful method. Someone has to make the contacts and do the actual promotion work and those contacts have to made to the people in a position of actual authority or influence.

At this point in the Vanguard Nexus process we will prepare the perfect, concise, 60- second sales presentation. In doing this we will attempt to establish and stress the "hook" benefit that you possess... the thing that will grab the interest of the hiring authority and set you apart from any other candidate. Then Vanguard Nexus will set about making that "advanced link" from which we derived our name. Ironically the "hook" may very well be that you are of such consequence, a person of such action, and such creative problem solving ability that you, unlike the nameless undistinguished hoards, are using a third party public relations method to introduce yourself and make your interest in the hiring authority and his company known.

THE COVER LETTER - $40

Our goal in the introductory call will be to stimulate enough interest for the hiring manager to personally request your resume. If we get the request Vanguard Nexus will write a cover letter that re-sells you and reinforces the cold call conversation. It will refer to the actual call and also contain your "features grocery list" enumerating your most salable and applicable skills. This is a one time fee as the same cover letter, with only minor changes to personalize it, will be used for each resume request.

THE FOLLOW UP CALL - $40

Vanguard Nexus will follow-up the resume with a re-sale phone call and attempt to set up a telephone meet and chat conversation/interview between you and the hiring authority. This is a per appointment charge.

From this point in the process Vanguard Nexus will have no further contact with the hiring authority or company. Having established the link now our attention falls to you to assist you in completing the process successfully.

TELEPHONE INTERVIEW PREPARATION - $60

We will now prepare you for a successful telephone meet and greet interview. We will assist you with researching the company and the hiring authority to find either professional or personal information which can be used toward achieving an impressive and stimulating conversation aimed towards moving the process to the invitation for a face to face meeting. Together with your knowledge of your industry and our knowledge of interviewing techniques we will decide upon appropriate questions for you to ask and topics for you to broach that will illustrate your knowledge and interest in the interviewing company. You will be coached on identifying the hiring authority’s needs and quickly converting your past experience into meeting those needs. Preparation is key to success as this will be your first personal contact and first impressions are critical. After the interview we will de-brief you so that together we can glean all pertinent information whether or not you achieved the invitation in for the face to face interview. This is a per interview charge since each interview will require its own research and strategy. If you do not get a firm commitment for a face to face interview but you still have interest in the company and a position with the company a follow-up re-sale letter should be considered.

THE FACE TO FACE INTERVIEW PREP - $60

This is the main event and the part of the hiring process that all candidates dread the most. It’s the "make or break" moment where the candidate must "perform" to succeed. Vanguard Nexus will attempt to prepare you for all contingencies from the ridiculous to the sublime, from how you look, act, respond, talk, eat, drink, dress etc. We will also provide you with the one and only actual "secret to successful interviewing" or X-factor. This is a per interview charge because once again each interview requires separate research and strategies.

THE FOLLOW-UP RE-SALE LETTER. $80

Vanguard Nexus will debrief you after the interview to ascertain all salient points discussed and prepare for you a re-sell follow up letter stressing the strong points from the interview, reiterating your abilities to contribute and minimizing any perceived short falls or concerns left in the mind of the hiring authority. We will accentuate your interest in the company and the position and request the a second and final interview.

This is not a "thanks for your time" generic afterthought courtesy note but one of, if not the most important parts of the hiring process. If written correctly, a great follow up-letter can save a borderline interview, move a good interview to a second and final one, and be the single feature to sets you apart from and heads above other applicants.
You will take over each negotiation from this point on using what you have learned throughout your work with Vanguard Nexus to close the hiring company and get the offer.

Per step pricing is problematical for Vanguard Nexus because, as any executive recruiter (headhunter) can tell you or seasoned job hunter knows, a complete collapse can occur at any point in this or any hiring process. This is why anyone who offers guarantees of success in career counseling, placement work, outplacement or any such service should be held suspect. After 20 years of experience in executive recruiting, the only constant I have found is that there is no constant. When one deals with people, the variables are incalculable and the reason the executive recruiter is paid such a high commission.

INTRODUCTORY PACKAGE PRICE

Vanguard Nexus is offering an introductory package plan for $600.
This will provide for 25 hours of individualized service over a one month period as originally determined by the free consultation call and then as the process dictates..
Resume preparation is not included in this introductory package but is a separate service.

PAYMENT METHOD

Vaguard Nexus is the new individual consulting division of a the long standing executive recruiter Harcor Quest and Associates Executive Search. We are used to billing corporate clients using a retained formula. This is the standard method of billing so that all parties concerned have a built-in stop-loss and no one party is, at any point in the process, left unprotected or uncompensated for services provided.

Should you, after the free consultation phone call, decide to use our promotional services, we would require ½ our introductory package fee, or $300. in check or money order before we begin work on your presentation program. Then, 2 weeks into your introductory service package, once your targeted list has been compiled and presentation phone calls have begun, the second half of your payment will be due and must be received before work can continue on your promotional plan. This is an attempt to summarize your career, be it 3 years or 30. In a few short sentences you’ve got to tell where you’ve been and where your heading.

Example: General Manager/Sales Executive with over 20 years of progressive bottom line responsibility in operations management, sales and sales management for the metals, plastics and material handling industries. Results oriented with proven capabilities in:

Most Important part of resume - Your bullet pointed grocery list of qualifications - in parallel columns, (which can't be done here) at least 8 skills, can be as many as 16, please make sure there are equal number of lines on each side.

*

* Division P&L Accountability

* Total Qualitv Management

* Product/Market Development

* Strategic Planning

* Productivity Improvement

* Customer Focus/Satisfaction

* Leadership/Team Building

* Quality Systems ISO/QS

*

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

NAME OF LATEST COMPANY FIRST - CAPPED, City, ST, Work dates - on same line, flush with right margin

A 1-2 line description of the company in finer font (can go to 10pt). This is very important. Not all companies have name recognition or they’ve been taken over and changed their name, maybe even several times.

EXP. A New York Stock Exchange Company (ALC) with $350 million in sales revenue, and 2,400 employees involved in proprietary and OEM metal and plastics manufacturing.

Your Title - Company Division (IA) City, State Exp. VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES, Marketing and New Product Development - Enda Division, Portage, WI

Brief 2-3 line job description - Optional, Exp. Responsible for sales, marketing and product development of the $60 million Enda Division, producing thermo formed plastic material handling and industrial packaging products.

Here’s where you start your feature/benefit, or action/result presentation. List all with bullet points, start with a 2 syllable action word ending in "ed", result word will end in "ing". You may not use the same action or result word twice. You may not change format throughout the rest of this section.

Note - this is the difficult part of writing a resume. You can not just list your responsibilities on a particular job. That means you are just sending your potential employer a job description. You simply can’t assume that telling someone what you did will be translated by them into why they should hire you. You must say what you did and how your current employer benefitted (and assume that from this illustration your next employer will see that the same action will benefit him if he hires you). While not all benefits can be described in quantitative terms use % and $s wherever possible. Your most important contributions should be listed first and you may mention as many per job as you have room for keeping the resume on 2 pages and at the font specifications mentioned above. For those of you who have 25 or 30 years of experience you may have to go to 3 pages. Better 3 pages than making the type so small no one will want to read it.

Example: Designed and implemented first Market Automation system assuring availability of essential market data for new product introductions, competitive strategies and management directives.

(Note - action and result words are highlighted only for the purpose of this discussion.)

2nd page must have your name and Page# on it. Upper left corner. Page of page advisable especially if you run over 2 pages.

Exp - JOHN SMITH - Page Two or JOHN SMITH - Page 2 of 2

EDUCATION
This section always belongs at this point in a resume unless you are light on job experience such as recent graduates. This includes all Ivy leaguers. It doesn't matter how top- notch the institution, your education is still in your past.

Exp. - B.S., University of Dayton, Dayton, OH - Mechanical Engineering Technology, 1976
Graduate Studies in Business, St. Francis College, Fort Wayne, IN, 1976

Note - You may list your grade point average, cum laude or Class placement if it is to your credit and advantage. You should list date of graduation. For older applicants, yes inclusion of graduation year can be used to ascertain approximate age, but if you don’t put it in it red flags that you are concerned with your age or may imply that you didn't actually graduate.

TRAINING AND SPECIAL SKILLS
Here you list all applicable seminars, training institutes, continuing education courses, awards, designations, accolades etc.

Exp. - Industrial Marketing Executive Leadership 1989
Team Leadership Financial Training 1987
QS/ISO 9000 I.S.1985

Note; You may also include any impressive institution where you took any applicable course and/or any instuctor who may be reknown in the field or industry.

AFFILIATIONS
List all professional, social or community organizations you are involved with. Avoid mentioning any organization that is religious, political or controversial.

Exp. - Society of Marketing Executives (SME) Madison, WI
United Way of Portage, Board Member
Material Handling Institute - Returnable
Plastic Container & Pallet Association

PERSONAL

This section is purely optional and I feel outdated and not recommended. It is an open invitation to discrimination. But if you must say something about yourself personally make sure it is a selling point.

You should certainly put multi-lingual in this catagory where if it is applicable and sooner or later you will have to talk about your U.S. Citizenship and green card status - because here is an area where discrimination is mandated

You may list..

Hobbies - if they relate to your professional goals

Exp. - Mechanical engineers who build their own racing cars or Doctors who volunteer at the free clinic.

Marital status and or children - I say NO purely discriminatory, except where discrimination may work in your favor.

Exp. - A salesman who will be required to do a lot of traveling may have an advantage if they are without ties. Married people may have an advantage to those companies who set a high store on "family values" or see marriage as a mark of stability.

Another note to all resume writers - Keep the "corbonics" or that stilted "corporate-eeze" language which, for those who really take it to an extreme, make resumes impossible to read or understand. If the HR person, recruiter or hiring authority can’t understand what you do or what position you want, you're out of the running because they are not likely to tell you they don’t understand it or ask you to be more clear.

A word too about ACRONYMS- every industry uses them but not everyone reading your resume will know them. (Put a brief description in parentheses after each, or at least the most unusual ones.)

R. As generalists, the Harcor team is better able to meet the wide range of needs for both service and industrial client companies. The following is only a short list of searches that illustrates Harcor Quest's versatility; R&D/Quality Chemists, Scientists and Engineers; Toxicologists and Environmental Specialists; Engineering (Multiple Disciplines and Industries); Project/Product/Marketing Management; Manufacturing/Operations Management and IT/Network Professionals.

Rachel Taylor, managing director, founded the firm in 1986. Born and raised in Cleveland, she is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College and comes from a professional background of education, psychology, sociology, and social services. Ms. Taylor was trained in the recruiting profession by one of the largest national executive recruiting firms in the Search Industry. Ms. Taylor made the decision to go independent to pursue a philosophy of personalized service and excellence for both client company and candidate.

To further expand on that mission, Beverly Lacy was added to the Harcor organization as a managing partner. Ms. Lacy is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace in Chemistry and holds a Masters Degree in Quality Management from Akron University. She has over 25 years of experience in corporate America with such renown names as B.F. Goodrich, Union Carbide, M.A. Hanna and Nalco in research, development, manufacturing and quality in the areas of organic and inorganic chemicals, polymers, plastics and pharmaceuticals. Besides outlining all technical skills required, Harcor will also seek to determine other important factors such as your company's philosophy, culture, operating styles and personality of superiors and associates insuring the highest compatibility between candidates and client company.

THE SEARCH BEGINS FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE

Once a clear understanding of the position is conveyed, Harcor uses a wide variety of research sources to find the competitive companies within your industry. Confidential contact is made and the client company's opportunity is presented to people in the appropriate field. When an interested party is identified as a qualified prospect, it's on to the next phase of the placement.

EVALUATION AND PRESENTATION

When the credentials of the interested candidate are received, the search consultant conducts an in-depth interview and evaluates the candidate’s total qualifications and "match" to your specifications. In the presentation stage, a "package" consisting of the top pre-screened and pre-qualified candidates will be presented to the hiring authority for evaluation. The search consultant will then coordinate client/candidate interviews. Preliminary telephone interviews or in-person interviews are set as best fit the client company's needs and hiring procedures. When interviews have determined the best client/candidate compatibility, the search consultant will assist the client in the sensitive negotiations required to ensure the selected candidate's acceptance of the position.

A WORD ABOUT REFERENCE CHECKING

Harcor Quest will do complete reference checking on the chosen candidate or the hiring company's own HR department may wish to do this independently of, or in conjunction with, a Harcor Account Manager as best suits its own screening procedures and policies.

FEES FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICE

Harcor Quest's fee arrangements are established verbally and in writing with clients prior to starting an assignment.
